TORCH CRAFT WORKSHOP

WITH DEAN BROWN

 

4. – 6. Mai 2015 at kwirl

 

Within the Designmonat Graz and as side program to the exhibition UNIKAT, Storialab and Kwirl have invited Dean Brown to host a workshop in Graz. In three days the students/designers will be able to design and make a Torch Light using hand tools and craft methods. Bringing together hand-carved wood and electrical lighting components, they will learn to create a working electrical product that represents an alternative to industrialised manufacturing.

 

Adopting the themes of the Maker Movement and Arts and Crafts Theory, these artefacts should bear the marks of their maker and have worth through hand-made qualities. The project will familiarise you with “quick & dirty” prototyping methods using electrical components and wood. On a more conceptual level it will introduce you to aesthetic metaphors, maker history and how these can inform the design of contemporary products.

 

ABOUT DEAN BROWN

 

Dean Brown is a London based designer with an interest in concept retail, narrative driven installations and cultural artifacts. Alongside his own practice he was a long term design resident and senior consultant for Fabrica a Design Research Centre based in Treviso, Italy. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Milan Furniture Fair,ICFF New York, London Design Festival, the V&A and Design Museum, London. Projects of note include designing a multi sensory public laboratory of temperature, reinterpreting a John Ruskin Craft Manifesto as contemporary open source lighting products, and rethinking a Museum as a nomadic travelling room. Such projects require an open minded hands on attitude to the design process, learning through practice based research.

 

The workshop is open to 10 people and will take place from Monday 4.5.2015 to Wednesday 6.5.2015 from 10:00 to 17:00. It will be hosted by at Kwirl in the Mariahilfestraße, Graz.
